Postdoctoral Fellow Receives Honorable Mention
Congratulations to CERC NEST Postdoctoral Fellow Alex Nelson, who will receive an Honorable Mention for the George W. Smith Graduate Student Paper Award. Their paper, “At All Costs: Testifying for Housing Justice through Canada’s Federal Human Rights Review Panels,” was recognized for its contribution to Institutional Ethnography by an emerging scholar. The award will be presented at the annual gathering of the Society for the Study of Social Problems in New York City in August 2026.
Postdoctoral Fellow Presents at WPSC in Helsinki
Elisa Privitera presented a draft of our paper on restorative justice in community-centred urban innovation at the 2026 World Planning Schools Congress. Her presentation examined how restorative approaches can address historical inequalities, power imbalances, and the exclusion of marginalized communities from urban planning. Conference discussions emphasized the importance of community knowledge, lived experience, and local agency. Elisa will use these insights to further develop the paper.
Workshop with Esperanza – Los Angeles
On July 13, 2026, the CERC NEST team held a two-hour workshop with 15 local leaders at Esperanza Community Housing to share findings from Angelinos’ Voices: Catalyzing Community Capacity for Equity in Climate Action. Participants validated findings on rising living costs, income insecurity, and barriers to equitable climate action, while highlighting strengths such as mutual care, local knowledge, and resilience. We hope to continue this engagement through future community workshops!
